Tah-gah-jute; or, Logan and Cresap

Baltimore: Maryland Historical Society, 1851. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7. Very Good. Item #10605

RARE 1st Edition of this paper presented before the Maryland Historical Society on its 6th Anniversary in 1851. In modern black cloth binding. Square Tight Binding. Deaccessioned from the Musuem of the the American Indian. Little has been written about the famed Maryland frontiersman Michael Cresap, who was erroneously blamed for killing the family of Chief Logan, which ignited Lord Dunmore's War in 1774. Thomas Jefferson perpetuated the myth of Cresap's involvement in the murders, likely committed by Daniel Greathouse, another rough and tumble pioneer. This work attempts to set the record straight and is a well written history of Cresap, who raised one of the Maryland rifle companies which headed to Cambridge to join the fledgling army of George Washington surrounding the British at Boston. Mild wear including a few library markings. Pages lightly tanned.
