Gibson (1788-1868) was an early American surgeon whose groundbreaking surgical techniques and experimentation paved the way for advances which would revolutionize surgery by the Civil War. He was the son of notable Talbot County businessman and legislator John Gibson, for whom Gibson Island is named, and has ties to St. John's College in Annapolis, Princeton, and served as the Chair of the Surgery Department at the University of Pennsylvania from 1819 until he retired in 1855.
