The New American Practical Navigator; being an Epitome of Navigation.....

Newburyport, Ma: Edmund Blunt, 1807. 2nd Edition. 8vo. Very Good. Item #12951

1807 2nd edition of what Howes calls the "First accurate navigator's guide' and an institution in Nautical writing, possibly the most important navigator in American history.

Bowditch published this work after 1 1799 trip in which he found and revised so many errors in the previous standard, Moore's 1772 'The New Practical Navigator'.

The errors were so numerous and egregious, rather than revising the previous work, Bowditch published his own, and history was made.

Original leather with gilt ruled spine. Spine label of gilt title blocked in red. Fold-out map of the Atlantic ocean, with east and west coastlines intact at front.

Profusely illustrated with maps, charts and graphs. Square Tight Binding. Interior clean, save for a signature and stamp to front pastedown and rear flyleaf. Interior moderately foxed throughout, as is common as these works were used in the damp salt air.

Original leather moderately rubbed, with wear at the corners. Overall an uncommon very EARLY edition of this classic and important nautical work.
