Sherman Oaks, CA: D'Ambrosio, Joseph, 1993. Limited Edition. Near Fine. Item #13235
RARE! Limited edition by famed book artists Joseph D'Ambrosio, this being # 25 of a limited printing of just 25 copies.
Signed by D'Ambrosio on the limitations page at the end of the work. Laid in is a card summarizing the work with the number of copies listed crossed out and changed to zero, presumably by D'Ambrosio.
Thickly-cast paper covering most of the front board, shaped to resemble a solid marble block, protruding outward from the front board. As the pages open, eventually the paper is sculpted into to the form of D'Ambrosio's 'David' paper
sculpture, an homage to Michelangelo's masterpiece, with corresponding photographs, mounted to document the art and the body parts of the model.
The 57 handmade pages feature a variety of text as well as color printed images in human and geometric forms.
"D’Ambrosio’s David is an experiment in conflicting individual civil rights using Michelangelo’s poetry to steer the story of a contemporary young man named David. The work is bound in cast paper and Masonic Sheep. The high relief cast paper imagery conveys a marble quarry with a hunt of the figurines waiting to be released by the sculptor’s chisel. Nestled within is a suggestion of the block from which Michelangelo carved his statue of David."
This work took D'Ambrosio six years to produce.
White Masonic Sheep leather binding. The book is in Near Fine condition, with two tiny translucent spots on the title page and mild rubbing along the bottom edge of the rear board. Bottom of felt stand, the part which would rest on any counter or table top, lightly solied from use.
This piece comes with a white felt covered book stand housed inside a clear plexi casing. Along the lower edge of the back of the case there is a small one-inch crack in the plexi, out of site if the book is displayed properly.
Overall a handsome and exceedingly rare piece from a master in the book arts.
