Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1822. 1st Edition. Very Good. Item #13260

A SPECTACULAR 1822 hand-colored map of Washington, DC, drawn by Fielding Lucas. The lithographic indentation encompassing the large center of this map is still quite sharp and very desirable. This map breaks down populations by Whites, Free Blacks and Slaves in DC at the time, an area which then included Alexandria, in Virginia today.

This map was published by henry Charles carey and Isaac Lea in the 1822 "A Complete Historical, Chronological and Geographical Atlas" and is quite uncommon in commerce. Engraving by Young and Delleker.

Fielding Lucas, Jr. (1781-1854), a Baltimore mapmaker and publisher, drew the map.

Surrounding the map is text documenting the geographical, statistical, and historical information about Washington, such as descriptions of the geography, government and a historical sketch of the District's history, including the burning of DC during the War of 1812.

Hand coloring remains bright and vibrant. One very small 1/4" closed separation along the right margin, not affecting any text or image and light sporadic foxing.

This map measures 22" X 17.5 and is PERFECT for framing and display!
