In His Own Country

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1935. 1st Edition. Octavo. Good+ / Good+. Item #13285

This 1935 Great Depression era novel of life on Maryland's Eastern Shore is exceedingly scarce in commerce, and this 1st Edition comes in rare original dust jacket.

Set just north of the historic town of Saint Michaels, in Talbot County, Gill's novel portrays a picture steeped in the rich tradition of a way of life along Chesapeake Bay, which is all but extinct today.

Green cloth with brown type. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for a small previous owner signature in ink to front end paper. Mild edge wear and light soiling to binding, with outer pages lightly foxed. Pastedowns a touch age toned. Dust jacket with mild rubbing, creasing, and edge wear, including a few chips, the largest being about 1/2-inch.

Overall an excellent example of a lovely work of Maryland's Eastern Shore during the Great Depression, calling forth fictional characters of two of Maryland's founding families, the Valliant and Paca families.

Price: $250.00
