The Nicholites "came into being along the Maryland-Delaware border about 1760...and soon waxed strong in Caroline and Dorchester Counties in Maryland...The Nicholites progressed from being a an unchurched group of fun-seeking persons to becoming a society of "sober and well-behaved men and women. Theire white garb, austere life, and spiritual development attracted the attention of Quakers, Methodists, Moravians, and other religious groups."
