An incredible Piece of U.S. Presidential history, this June 2, 1789 issue of the Salem Mercury features the complete printings of two letters regarding the 1788 U.S. Presidential Election, the first in U.S. history.

The first letter is from the U.S. Congress congratulating Revolutionary War hero George Washington on his election as the first U.S. President and organizing the new government. This letter features the signature in block type of newly-elected Vice President and President of the Senate, John Adams.

The second letter is from George Washington himself acknowledging receipt of the letter and thanking Congress for their warm wishes. This letter features the signature in block type of President George Washington.

Both of these letters are printed in their entirety on the back page, making this historic piece perfect for framing and display.
