Les Methodes Nouvelles Mecanique Celeste

Paris: Gauthier-Villars et Fils, 1892-1899. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7. Near Fine / Jackets not issued. Item #14643

Exquisite three volume set of Poincare's 19th-century astronomical-physics work, from the library of notable 20th-century mathematician M.H. Martin. Poincare was arguably the most important scientist working in Celestial Mechanics since Isaac Newton and his work differed sharply from those before him. "(Poincare) inaugurated the rigorous treatment of celestial mechanics, in opposition to the semi-empirical computations that had been prevalent before him." - Dictionary of Scientific Biography. His 'Nouvelles Celeste" is his Magnum Opus and one of the most important scientific works of the 19th century. Bound in green cloth gilt, possibly early 20th century. The signature of Martin is at the top of each front end paper. Very mild wear. A superior edition.
