Discovery: The Story of the Second Byrd Arctic Expedition

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1935. 1st Edition. 8vo. Very Good / Very Good-. Item #14644

A very nice association copy of this important Antarctic Exploration history.

Byrd had become the first person to fly over the South Pole in 1929 and this second Expedition almost cost Byrd his life. He was trapped at a weather station for five months, 123 miles from the 'Little America' base camp and nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

This edition contains a lengthy inscription, on a tipped in half-title page, which intimates a reasonably close association.

"To Col. Albann (?) Phillip with enduring appreciation and the highest regard and admiration for this great american - from RE Byrd - New Year Day 1936."

Blue cloth gilt. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for a p/o Christmas inscription. Mild rubbing and edge wear. Dust jacket with mild to moderate wear, including a few small chips and a shor closed tear at the top fore edge of the front panel, as well as a lightly sunned spine. Presents handsomely in archival mylar.

Overall a very nice inscribed Byrd association copy of one of the classic exploration works of the 20th century.
