The Scarce 1st Edition of Madox's iconic novel of Appalachia, in the rare original illustrated dust jacket.

Originally a poet, the Kentucky author's first novel catapulted her to stardom. Considered her finest work, 'Time of Man' tells the story about the daughter of an iterant farmer.

This particular copy belonged to shipping magnate Clifton Waller Barrett, with his bookplate on the front end paper. Barrett donated his collection to the University of Virginia and the University's Library of American Literature bears his name. This copy was a duplicate and features a small 'withdrawn' notice on paper attached to the lower rear pastedown.

Two-tone blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. Mild edge wear and a touch of fading to the gilt titling. Dust jacket, unclipped, with mild edge wear, including a larger 1.5-inch chip to the upper fore edge corner. Presents handsomely in archival mylar.

Overall a lovely and quite superior edition.
