1784 REVOLUTIONARY ERA Newspaper PAUL REVERE MASTHEAD George Washington Letter

Boston, Massachusetts: The Massachusetts Spy, 1784. Folio. Very Good. Item #15165

1784 REVOLUTIONARY War ERA Massachusetts Spy Newspaper with a large PAUL REVERE ENGRAVED Masthead at the top of the front page. This issue features long and detailed coverage of the immediate post-Revolutionary War era, including an inside-page exchange of letters between between the Virginia Assembly and George Washington.

In the letters, the assembly thanks General Washington with tremendous gratitude for his service to the country in leading the rag-tag Continental Army to victory over the British, and wishes him a happy, healthy, peaceful retirement to private life.

In his return letter, with his signature in block type at the end, Washington writes:

"Nothing can add more to the pleasure which arises from a conscious discharge of publick trust than the approbation of one's country. To have been so happy, under a vicissitude of fortune, amidst of the difficult and trying scenes of an arduous conflict, as to meet this, is, in my mind, to have attained the highest honour - and the consideration of it, in my present peaceful retirement, will heighten all my domestick joys, and constitute my greatest felicity."

Also featured in this issue are two other extremely important events. The back page features a long and detailed report announcing that the Continental Congress has admitted Vermont into the Confederation of States as a free and independent state, completely sovereign, as the United States as we know it today would not exist yet for another five years.

On an inside page there is another detailed report announcing that the Continental Congress has established the new Department of Finance, to superintend the U.S. Treasury. This Department of Finance would be the forerunner of the United States Department of the Treasury, which would come into existence in 1789 after the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.

The report also names the initial members who would serve on the Treasury Board, including Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer, Maryland; Oliver Ellsworth, a future Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Connecticut; and William Denning, New York.

This issue of The Massachusetts Spy (Boston, MA) dated September 2, 1784, was published by Isaiah Thomas and features fantastic PAUL REVERE and immediate post-REVOLUTIONARY WAR history!

This historical piece features a RARE Paul Revere ENGRAVED Masthead, with two Revere Medallions bookending the newspaper title. The left medallion contains the patriotic slogan "Liberty Defended From Tyranny'. The right medallion features two hands warmly embracing above the word 'Union', surrounded by 13 chain links, representing the 13 colonies and original states.

Very Good condition with mild edge wear, sporadic foxing, and a few closed tears, including a one-inch closed separation in the masthead in-between the 2nd and 3rd lines, with a very small conservation-tape repair to verso.

A beautiful piece of important very-early U.S. history perfect for framing and display!
