Hartford, CT: Park Publishing Co., 1882. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7. Very Good. Item #15193
1882 2nd Edition of Frederick Douglass' 3rd and final autobiography, originally published in 1881.
Douglass' written life story was very similar to 'Leaves of Grass', by poet Walt Whitman, in that both were continually adding to their works as their lives progressed, and Douglass' 'Life and Times' itself went thru several iterations. This 1882 2nd Edition is more than 100 pages longer than the 1st printing published just the year before.
618 pp. This 3rd autobiography is nearly 500 pages longer than his first, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass..." (1845) and contains the historic events of the Civil War for the first time.
Brown cloth with titling in gilt to spine. Clean interior. Black and white frontis portrait of Douglass with facsimile signature. 18 plates.
This is a yeoman's copy which bears the signs of its use throughout the years. Binding somewhat shaken, with some play to the signatures but holding. Moderate rubbing, soiling and edge wear to binding, more so at corners. Occasional light dampstaining and sporadic foxing. A narrow chip to the gutter in between the frontis and title pages (See Photos). Pencil notations to front end paper.
Contemporary editions of Douglass' autobiographies are increasingly difficult to come by. Here we offer a competent volume which would make a nice addition to any modern-day Douglass collection.
