Moscow: Academia, 1934. Folio. Very Good. Item #15203
A Spectacular 1934 portfolio of 100 illuminated color miniature illustrations from Medieval Russia, published in Moscow during the pre-WW II rule of Joseph Stalin.
Of the original 100 prints in the collection, three are lacking, nos. 72, 73 and 99, making a total of 97 of the original 100 present.
The lacking prints are -
72. Sunrise and Sunset
73. The Indian Ocean
99. A Cover of the Gospel Decorated with Applique-Work. A.D. 1527
The miniatures rest loose in the folding portfolio and are accompanied by a 43-page booklet with the title and a description of each of the 100 prints as well as an index at the rear. Each print measures 15" X 11.5".
The portfolio is bound in original publisher's burgundy cloth with ruling and medallion stamped in blind, with four fold-overs, one on each side of varying length. Titling in cream to upper board.
Booklet lightly age toned with mild wear. Very sporadic light foxing to some prints, otherwise most clean and bright with vibrant color.
Overall, this portfolio is incredibly beautiful and quite scarce in commerce. An exquisite example of Medieval Russian artwork.
