1802 Newspaper with a Runaway Slave Ad Placed by Revolutionary War General Edward Hand from his Lancaster, Pennsylvania Plantation

Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Gazette & Daily Advertiser, 1802. Folio. Very Good. Item #15353

A beautiful 1802 historic Philadelphia newspaper with a back-page ad placed by Revolutionary War General Edward Hand offering a $30 reward for the capture of his slave "Frank" who ran away from his Lancaster, Pennsylvania Plantation.

The ad boasts a large headline "30 Dollars Reward" and goes into great detail describing the "NEGR0 man....about thirty years of age, and about five feet eight inches high, stout made but not corpulent, perfectly black, has a pleasing countenance, his speech is mild and his voice rather effeminate when sober, but he is very noisy and impertinent when in liquor..."

Hand's plantation remains an important historic site today.

"Hand bought the land on which the plantation was built in two transactions, first purchasing 160 acres in 1785 and later buying an additional 17 acres in 1792. In late 18th Century Pennsylvania, the word “plantation” was a term for land under cultivation—essentially synonymous with “farm”—and had not yet developed the close association with slavery that it has in modern parlance. Nevertheless, slavery was legal in all of the thirteen original states and existed in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania during the time of the Hand family's residence at Rock Ford. Hand was also an enslaver, owning several enslaved people, one of whom, Frank, ran away in 1802." - Wiki

This ad is on the back page and perfectly suited for framing and display. This newspaper was printed on thick rag paper and is in very good condition with mild wear.
