A beautiful 1st edition of Union Major-General Newton Martin Curtis's memoirs; inscribed by him on the front end paper to George F. Seward, longtime U.S. diplomat to China during the latter half of the 19th century and nephew of William Seward, Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of State during the Civil War, dated October 10, 1906.

Newton served with distinction during the Civil War after volunteering as a Captain on the 16th NY Infantry. He was wounded during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862 and eventually rose to the rank of Brigadier General, with a brevet promotion during the Petersburg Campaign.

Blue cloth with gilt and red design to front board. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Top edge gilt. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard.

Mild edge wear to binding, else Fine.
