HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE FIRST REGIMENT MARYLAND INFANTRY, With an Appendix Containing a Register of the Officers and Enlisted men, Biographies of Deceased Officers, Etc., War of the Rebellion, 1861-65

Washington, DC: Gibson Brothers, 1871. 1st Edition. Duodecimo. Good+. Item #15480

A Scarce history of this important Maryland Union Regiment during the Civil War.

The Union 1st Maryland had been attacked by their fellow Marylanders, the Confederate 1st Maryland Infantry, CSA at Front Royal in May, 1862, the Confederates belonging to General Stonewall Jackson’s Army.

“This is the only time in United States military history that two regiments of the same numerical designation and from the same state have engaged each other in battle. After hours of desperate fighting the Southerners emerged victorious. When the prisoners were taken, many men recognized former friends and family. According to J. J. Goldsborough, who would go on to write the history the Maryland Line in the Confederate Army:

‘nearly all recognized old friends and acquaintances, whom they greeted cordially, and divided with them the rations which had just changed hands’ “

312pp. Brick-colored cloth. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Pages somewhat tanned. Binding with mild to moderate rubbing and edge wear with gilt titling on spine largely faded. Front end papers appear to be modern, indicating previous restoration work.

An attractive 1st Edition copy of a scarce and desirable Maryland Civil War history.
