Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant in Two Volumes

New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885. 8vo. Near Fine. Item #15525

The finest 1st Trade Edition of Grant's Memoirs we've seen.

The story of Grant and his magnum opus remains just as riveting today as it was nearly 140 years ago. Nearly destitute in his later life, Grant wrote his memoirs as a means to support his family after he was gone. He finished them just three days before he perished and with the help of his good friend Mark Twain, who served as editor, the work would become wildly successful and become generally regarded as the greatest memoir ever written.

To spur sales of the memoir, Twain came up with the brilliant idea of dressing former Union soldiers in their old uniforms and sending them door to door across the country to obtain subscriptions.

This set is in exquisite condition, with few flaws.

Maps, Illustrations and large fold-outs. Green cloth gilt with large gilt medallions to boards. Gilt to spines. Square Tight Bindings. Clean interiors. the mildest of rubbing and edge wear. The gilt is still bright all the way around and all four hinges are nice and tight. Each volume has a small, postage-stamp sized bookplate to the front endpaper, based on design, possibly c.1920s.

A lovely set of collecting and gift giving quality.
