St. Michaels, Marylland: 1870s-80s. Very Good. Item #15681

A compelling lot of five (5) original 1870s-1880s manuscript documents, mostly relating to the historic Woodstock Plantation in Talbot County, Maryland, two of the documents are signed by Harrison a total of five times, both documents written in Harrison's hand.

Woodstock was built by Harrison beginning in c.1835, and was Harrison's home between 1867 and 1884, before he moved to Foxley Hall in Easton to live his last years with his daughter and son-in-law, Oswald Tilghman.

Harrison remains a giant in Talbot County and Eastern Shore history. He was a gentleman farmer, a preeminent historian of his day, a medical doctor and President of the County School Board.

The five documents are:

An 1883 inventory of Harrison's estate in his hand and signed by the doctor twice. Entries include the Woodstock Farm valued at $20,000, and 300 shares of Easton Bank stock valued at $12,000, and his personal library valued at $200. This is a single sheet, written on both sides with light dampstaining along the upper edge.

A similar 1876 inventory of Harrison's estate, listing the Woodstock Farm as a total of 394 acres, of which 130 were woodlands at the time. Harrison placed a value of $11,720 on the farm in 1876. This document is a single sheet folded to create four pages, three of which have writing. This document has small pinholes at some fold intersections.

The 3rd document is 1874 preliminary deed for the Woodstock Farm, signifying the mortgage on the property has been paid in full, and liisting the property at 394 acres. This document is signed by Justice of the Peace William B. Wheeler and Charles Hopper Gibson, the State's Attorney for Talbot County who would go on to become a U.S. Senator representing Maryland in the 1890s.

The 4th document is a a sales document regarding Woodstock from the Land Agent firm of R.W. Templeton in Baltimore.

The 5th document is a receipt from the Circuit Court of Talbot County in a case, Harrison vs McMillen, in which Harrison paid the Plaintiff $49.65

These documents remain in excellent condition with minimal wear. Original fold lines.
