Featured in this historic issue is a full-page woodcut engraving of a southern slave auction (Montgomery, Alabama) picturing African American families being sold on the block, accompanied by a detailed headline report on the experience.

The image depicts, among other things, a black woman and her baby being sold as the auctioneer shouts out to the white plantation owners in attendance. Behind her, presumably her husband is next on the block and his clothes are being torn open for a prospective buyer to inspect his potential purchase,

Also in this issue is another full-page engraving of Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet during the earliest stages of the Civil War.
