Chick Evans' Golf Book: The Story of the Sporting Battles of the Greatest of All Amateur Golfers

New York: for Thos. E. Wilson & Co. by The Reilly & Lee Co., 1921. 1st Edition. 8vo. Very Good / Good. Item #15845

A scarce 1921 1st edition in the extremely rare original dust jacket.

One of the greatest golfers of the sport's early Golden Era, Evans was the first person to win the U.S. Amateur (then considered a major) and the U.S. Open in the same year (1916), still one of only two golfers to accomplish the feat (Bobby Jones).

Never turning pro, Evans played in 50 consecutive amateurs and was awarded the Bob Jones Award in 1960, the highest award given by the USGA.

This volume features 65 illustrations culled from Evans' own collection. 343pp + ad. Green cloth with gilt titling. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Mild rubbing and edge wear to binding, with very light dampstain affecting the upper fore edge corner of the last few pages and same area of inner rear jacket flap.

Rare dust jacket with mild rubbing and noticeable edge wear, including a two-inch wide by one-inch high chip to the lower rear panel at the spine, as well as several small edge chips and short closed tears. Sunning to spine and front panel edges. Jacket presents handsomely in archival mylar.

Overall, a handsome piece of early 20th-century golf history in the desirable illustrated dust jacket.
