The New York Weekly Journal, 1740 - Bound volume of facsimile issues
folio. Very Good. Item #15851
A large bound volume of facsimile issues of the New York Weekly Journal, one of the earliest newspapers printed in North America, dating from January 7, 1740 - December 29, 1740, printed by John Peter Zenger.
Zenger is still famous today due to the lawsuit brought against him in 1735 for seditious libel and establishing the precedent for Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press which would be incorporated into the Bill of Rights.
Each leaf is printed on one side only, making each page of each newspaper, in effect, a broadside.
These pages contain important news from throughout the colonies under the reign of George II, as well as international news and local advertising.
There is no bibliographic data printed in the book, so the publisher, date and place are unknown.
Bound in red cloth. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for bookplate to front pastedown, with later professional inner hinge repair. Mild rubbing and edge wear.
Overall a handsome volume and invaluable source of colonial New York history.
