New York: Chapman Publishing Company, 1898. 1st Edition. Quarto. Good. Item #16137
A scarce 19th-century Eastern Shore of Maryland history.
This history is divided into two parts, the first being biographical sketches of all of the U.S. Presidents up through William McKinley. Each detailed sketch features a black and white illustrated plate of the President.
The second portion of the book, comprising most of its 927 pages, features sketches and portraits of contemporary notable figures from Maryland's Eastern Shore, such as Civil War Governor Thomas Hicks, Confederate Army officer and Oswald Tilghman, among many others. Not all of the Eastern Shore bios have attached portraits.
Scarce to begin with, this book, when found, is usually beaten to smithereens, and while this one is better than most , it does have some issues. 927pp. This volume has been rebacked in black cloth with a paper title label to spine. The black cloth has also been used to reinforce the corners. Inner hinges and board edges also reinforced with library tape. Boards with moderate rubbing and wear.
Overall an adequate copy of a scarce and desirable title. This is a large and heavy item and extra shipping may be required.
