1794 newspaper with Two Light Horse Harry Lee Letters During the Whiskey Rebellion

New York: The Herald; A Gazette for the Country, 1794. Very Good. Item #16204

An original 1794 newspaper with two back-page long and detailed letters from Revolutionary War hero Light Horse Harry Lee, appoint by George Washington command an army to put down the Whiskey Rebellion in Western Pennsylvania.

The Whiskey Rebellion was a violent tax protest in the United States beginning in 1791 and ending in 1794 during the presidency of George Washington. The so-called "whiskey tax" was the first tax imposed on a domestic product by the newly formed federal government.

Each letter features the signature of Lee in block type at the end. While both letters contain exceptional Whiskey Rebellion content, one is actually a proclamation by Lee addressed to the inhabitants of Western Pennsylvania, calling on the protesters to lay down their arms and live in peace.

"You see encamped in the bottom of your district, a numerous and well-appointed army, formed of citizens of every description, from this & the neighboring states of New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia, whom the violated laws of our common country have called from their homes to vindicate and restore their authority", Lee writes.

This November 20, 1794 issue of the Herald is complete in four pages and is perfect for framing and display!
