The Life of Francis Marion
New York: Henry Langley Astor House, 1845. 1st Edition. 8vo. Very Good. Item #16267
An 1845 1st edition of a very scarce Revolutionary War title.
This is the true 1st Edition, preceding the book issued by Moore in Philadelphia the same year and the 1847 Horry version, and is quite rare.
Marion was one of the Revolution's most effective field commanders. The father of modern guerrilla warfare, he and his band of partisans using hit and run tactics to attack British troops before dashing back into hiding in the swamps of South Carolina, earning the nickname "Swamp Fox" along the way.
Original brown cloth stamped in blind. 347pp. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for previous bookseller ticket and small stamp to front pastedown. Also a small previous owner stamp to front flyleaf.
Brown cloth with mild to moderate rubbing and edge wear. A small circular dampstain to front board, about the size of a quarter. Presents handsomely in an archival mylar sleeve.
Overall a lovely example of the quite scarce 1st Edition of an important 19th-century history.
