London: J. & A. Churchill, 1893. 1st Edition. Elephant Folio. Very Good. Item #17209
An incredible elephant-folio sized portfolio containing large, fold-out architectural plans of hospitals and medical buildings around the world in the late 19th century, including Johns Hopkins, in Baltimore; Michael Reese Jewish Hospital, in Chicago; Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, in Hanover, New Hampshire; The Moses Taylor Hospital, in Scranton, PA; The New York Cancer Hospital, in NYC; and many, many more.
This historic piece was part of a five-volume set, "Hospitals and Asylums of the World: Their Origin, History, Construction, Administration, Management, and Legislation." - 1891-1893. This offering is for the most desirable of the five, the "Portfolio" only.
112 sheets in all, many fold-outs, including several with multiple folds creating large, poster-sized frameable works of art dedicated to the medical field world-wide.
Quarter burgundy morocco over burgundy leather-covered boards. Titling stamped in gilt. Binding square, though a touch shaken. Mild rubbing and edge wear, more so at corners. Interior clean and bright.
Overall a quite desirable piece of medical history and an excellent addition to any modern-day medicine or architecture collection.
