This historic piece features bold stacked headlines and then commences with the list, including Ulysses S. Grant from Major General of Volunteers to Major General; George G. Meade, victor at the Battle of Gettysburg, from Major General of Volunteers to Brigadier General; and Abner Doubleday, the inventor of modern-day baseball, from Major to Lieutenant Colonel, among many others.

Also included in Lincoln's nomination are white officers to lead various unites of the U.S. Colored Troops, the African Americans fighting for the Union during the Civil War.
