The Joker is Wild: The Story of Joe E. Lewis

New York: Random House, 1955. 2nd Printing. 8vo. Very Good / Very Good. Item #17625

A handsome 2nd printing of this engaging biography of this comedian and crooner from the Golden Age of entertainment, signed by Lewis on the front end paper.

Lewis got his start singing in one of the night clubs owned by Al Capone and when he refused to sign an extended contract with the club, was assaulted, without Capone's knowledge, and left for dead by one of Capone's top lieutenants.

He was able to resume his career in part thanks to a gift of $10,000 from Capone after he heard about the incident so that Lewis could heal properly.

Quarter grey cloth over black paper-covered boards. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Small ancient stain from a piece of tape to lower front endpaper. Corners with a touch of curling. Dust jacket with mild rubbing and edge wear. Presents handsomely in archival mylar.

A lovely edition.
