An 1861 Civil War newspaper with a front-page headline report announcing that the Ladies of Baltimore have smuggled a Confederate banner out of the state and brought it to present to the Confederate Troops of the Maryland Line in a ceremony in Richmond, Va.

The long and detailed report features a complete printing of a speech by Confederate Senator from Virginia, James Murry Mason. The flag was to be carried and flown in battle by the Maryland Line, and Murray promises that the flag would return triumphantly to Baltimore after the Confederate States have emerged victorious.

This ceremony took place just three weeks before the 1st Battle of Bull Run, the first major conflict of the Civil War.
