A lovely 1st Edition copy of what is arguably the preeminent literary work of the Great Depression era, signed and inscribed by Steinbeck on a bookplate on the first front flyleaf.
Publisher's pictorial linen. 619pp., featuring illustrated endpapers with the sheet music for "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Original, unclipped dust jacket depicting at the top inner flap a price of $2.75, and at the bottom of the flap "First Edition." Colophon page with "First Published in April 1939"
Square tight binding. Clean interior. Steinbeck's inscription reads in three lines - "To Danny With luck John Steinbeck".
Binding lightly soiled with mild wear. Interior clean and bright. Dust jacket soiled with edge wear, including a large chip at top of spine affecting title and author name, as well as a one-inch closed tear along upper front panel edge. Other mild wear at corners and along edges. Front panel and flap separated from spine. Presents handsomely in an archival mylar sleeve.
The signature and inscription have been professionally authenticated, with documentation included.
Overall a handsome piece, and a cornerstone addition to any fine Literary collection.
