1862 Civil War Medical Journal - Union Surgeon Dr. John Porter Acquitted of Cruelty Charges at mansion House Hospital in Alexandria, Va

Boston, MA: The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, 1862. 1st Edition. Very Good. Item #17937

A scarce edition of the journal, one of four which would eventually become the New England Journal of Medicine, with important Union hospital trial news.

Porter was charged with treating his patients cruelly and court marshalled. He was exonerated of all charges.

During the Mexican-American War, Porter was a surgeon in the U.S. Army. He vehemently opposed the use of newly discovered general anesthesia and forbid its use in his hospital:

"Anaesthetics poison the blood and depress the nervous system; and in consequence, hemorrhage is more apt to occur and union by adhesion is prevented." he wrote.
