Newburyport, MA: Edmund M. Blunt, 1809. 6th Edition. 8vo. Very Good. Item #18079
A Rare Early Printing of THE seminal early American coastal navigation guide. This is the 6th Edition, and the last to be printed in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
All of the Newburyport editions are quite scarce, and particularly so in original bindings, as many were lost in the Great Newburyport Fire of 1811.
Original leather, with gilt ruling to spine and black title label. Square tight binding. xiv, [15]-389pp, [3]. 15 plates, including five folding maps. Generally clean interior, save for the end and first few pages, which have wonderful contemporary signatures and notes, dating to the year 1812, including an 1823 entry on a rear flyleaf from the "U.S. Ship Liverpool - Packet of Boston. June the 14 - 1823 [illegible signature]".
Leather binding rubbed and moderately worn.
Spine rubbed with a shallow vertical crease. Sporadic foxing inside. Folding map of the Chesapeake with a chip along to lower outer edge [see pic]. Light dampstaining. Campbell, #6.
Overall a handsome, sound, and quite rare early Newburyport edition of Blunt's defining work.
