A Gorgeous 1798 Edition of the Preeminent 18th-Century Navigator

The New Practical Navigator; Being an Epitome of Navigation, Containing the Different Methods of Working the Lunar Observations, and All the Requisite Tables Used with the Nautical Almanac, in Determining the Latitude and Longitude...

London: Moore, John Hamilton, 1798. Octavo. Very Good+. Item #18122

A lovely 1798 edition of the precursor to "The New American Practical Navigator" by Nathaniel Bowditch, what Howes calls the "First accurate navigator's guide' and an institution in Nautical writing, possibly the most important navigator in American history."

Widely regarded as the most influential expert on navigation until the ascendence of Nathaniel Bowditch, Moore was the preeminent nautical figure of his day.

This is 13th Edition of the influential treatise originally published in 1772. [1], viii, 2-309, [tables + ads], [2]

Attractively rebound in modern leather with red title label. Profusely illustrated with charts, engravings and maps, some in text and others on plates. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Front endpaper with a dampstain, on the verso is the frontispiece of Moore. Other occasional sporadic foxing, but overall clean and bright.

Overall an uncommon and very nice edition of this classic and important nautical work.
