Two Baltimore, Maryland War of 1812 Newspapers with Front-Page Proclamations Marking the Beginning and End of the War from James Madison and Andrew Jackson.
These two historic issues of Niles' Weekly Register have spectacular front pages, perfect for framing and display together. The first, dated June 27, 1812, features a front-page proclamation from President James Madison which is the official Declaration of War by the United States against Great Britain. The Declaration is signed at the bottom in block type by Madison and Secretary of state, James Monroe.
"Whereas the congress of the United States, by virtue of the constituted authority vested in them have declared by their act, bearing the date the 18th day of the present month, that war exists between the united kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the dependencies thereof, and the United States of American and their territories: Now therefore, I James Madison, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the same to whom all it may concern..."
This proclamation features the bald Eagle emblem of the U.S. at the top and the proclamation is at the top of the front-page, just under the masthead.
The second issue, dated February 18, 1815 has a front page with a blod headline reading "Glorious News! Orleans saved and peace concluded, 'The Star Spangled banner in triumph shall wave o'er the land of the free and home of the brave."
This is followed by another headline - "New Orleans Preserved" and then Andrew Jackson's complete official report regarding his victory over the British at the Battle of New Orleans. This report is followed by Jackson's signature in block type at the end.
This issue also contains an inside-page complete printing of the Treaty of Ghent, the peace treaty ending the War of 1812, with Madison's and Monroe's signatures again in block type at the end, ratifying the treaty for the United States.
