A rare 1850 Cambridge, Md pre-Civil War newspaper, in exceptional condition, chock full of local and national news with great 19th Eastern Shore advertising, including an ad to buy NEGR0ES for cash.
This August 14, 1850 piece has a front-page headline report calling for the construction of an Eastern Shore railroad, with Cambridge as its hub, detailing the reasons for the necessity, stating that Cambridge "is emphatically the key of the whole Peninsula South and East of it" and specifically mentioning towns such as Princess Anne, Snow Hill, and White Haven, which would benefit from it.
The report speaks to the necessity of opening the Shore to big city markets such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York and bringing civilization to the rural region.
