Compelling Easton, Maryland Chattel Slave History

Rare 1823 EASTON MARYLAND newspaper - Five Runaway Slave Ads + Compensation for Slaves Seized by British During War of 1812

Easton, Maryland: The Republican Star & General Advertiser, 1823. Folio. Very Good. Item #18221

An incredible piece of Talbot County, Maryland post War of 1812 Black Americana.

This original April 15, 1823 issue of the Republican Star & General Advertiser, published in Easton, Maryland on the state's beautiful and primarily agricultural Eastern Shore, where slavery was more prevalent than in many other areas of the state.

This historic piece features five runaway slave ads on the back page, as well as two on an inside page, from Cecil and Frederick Counties, Maryland, Washington DC, Delaware, and also two ads from Virginia. These ads list slave names, such as Thomas, Lucretia, Samuel, and Charles.

An inside page also features a long notice addressed to slave holders who had their slaves seized by the British during the War of 1812, with slave holders hoping to receive restitution for their lost property.

Also featured is local and national news, as well as great local advertising, including an early illustrated ad for a Chesapeake Bay Steamboat.

This historic piece is in Very Good condition. Disbound.

Overall, a compelling reminder of pre-Civil War chattel slavery history in Easton and Talbot County.
