Brooklyn, NY: Privately Printed, 1814. 1st Edition. Duodecimo. Very Good. Item #18246

A lovely and important work of poetry in the early U.S., rebound in half blue and beige paper over boards.

Hazard's work was the first book of poetry published in Brooklyn. Fifteen poems, many of which deal with local interests, such as a school for orphans in Brooklyn, or the deaths of local figures.

Particularly notable is a four-part poem titled "The Fashionable Rake", describing the dandy lifestyle of a young man. "Elate with hope and flush'd with gay design, The joyous youth his club seeks o'er their wine." The original Brooklyn hipster!

A pencil notation at title page states that Hazard was schoolmaster at Sunken Meadow on Long Island.
