This May 4, 1861 CIVIL WAR Frank Leslie's Newspaper features a detailed inside-page report as well as a large fold-out engraving depicting the US NAVY YARD at NORFOLK, Virginia being BURNED to keep the ships and facilities out of the hands of the Confederates.
One of the ships sunk was the USS Merrimack, which would be raised by the Confederates and refitted, becoming the first Confederate Ironclad, CSS Virginia. which would be immortalized in the first naval battle between Ironclads, against the USS Monitor, in March, 1862.
This newspaper is complete in 14 pages and in very good condition, with some where along the centerfold edge. It is chock full of other Civil War news and engravings.
