A Detailed Mid-18th Century Map of the Southern Tip of Africa

A Map of the Cape of Good Hope & the Country adjacent 1752

London: The Gentleman's Magazine, 1755. 8vo. Very Good. Item #18448

A lovely map of the southern tip of Africa published to reflect recent observations and measurements made by French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille.

Lacaille spent three years at the Cape conducting astronomical geodedic observations in an attempt to determine the radius of the Earth in the Southern hemisphere.

This map reflects some of Lacaille's observations and measurements.

This offering is for the complete issue of the November, 1755 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine, which contains Gibson's map, and also a long and detailed description of Lacaille's observations. Depicted here are the various mountain ranges in South Africa, as well as many Dutch settlements and place names.

This map measures 8.25" X 5" and is perfect for framing and display. #2F-010.
