A very early hiking and travel guide to the iconic White Mountains of New Hampshire, complete with two original fold-out maps.
Published shortly after the end of the Civil War, when America, in its post war recovery haze, was just beginning to grasp the concept of the outdoors, especially physically strenuous activities such as hiking and camping, as recreational activities. This historic piece was published the same year as The United States established its first national park, Yellowstone.
Brick-colored cloth with titling in gilt. 248pp + ads. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Mild to moderate rubbing and edge wear to binding. Two fold-out maps with in-text black and white illustration. Two small closed tears to larger map along the left edge where tipped in to book.
This work features detailed descriptions of individual mountains, natural landmarks and attractions, as well as some of the towns nestled within the range.
Book presents handsomely in a clear archival mylar dust jacket. a lovely and quite scarce edition.
