RARE 1797 Newspaper with Queenstown, Maryland Runaway Slave Ad Offering Reward for Three Escaped Slaves

Philadelphia, PA: Porcupine's Gazette, 1797. Good. Item #18552

An extremely rare Philadelphia newspaper title with an Eastern Shore of Maryland runaway slave ad offering $150 for the capture or return of three slaves who ran away from Queen Anne's County, Md near Queenstown.

This September 26, 1797 newspaper is complete in four pages and also features great local advertising.

The back-page offers a $150 reward for "three likely NEGR0 men; one named Phill", who is "very black". Another, named Aleck, "has a tear on his throat......and is fond of dress." The last, named Dick is "straight and well made. He can read plain print."

Mild to moderate edge wear including a a diagonal tear, repaired with tape, along the lower left corner of the front page, not affecting the ad. Moderate foxing.

A compelling piece of Eastern Shore slavery history from more than 225 years ago, in the late 18th century.
