A whimsical pictorial map depicting the ever growing influence of Hitler's Germany shortly before the beginning of WW II, with Yardley's sarcastic captions below individual illustrations indicating what everyone believed at the time, that war was inevitable and Hitler's reasonings for is continual land grabs were merely a front for his true intentions.
An illustration along the Germany-Austria border shows Hitler pounding a spiked chain linking the countries with the caption - "Purely a cultural tie. Oh Ja!"
Another under one of the country's newly opened factories claims - "Factory devoted exclusively to making medals for Goering."
A third illustration depicts a "Big Bookburning Festival"
A fourth depicts a German citizen, prodded by a bayonet poking his bum and scurrying toward the civil war in Spain, with the caption - "Joyous volunteer off for Spain".
A compass rose at the top features as its centerpiece the German swastika.
Yardley was born in Baltimore in 1903 and spent most of his career as an editorial cartoonist for the Baltimore Sun papers, both morning and evening. He also was a prolific book illustrator and had his work published in the New Yorker and the Reporter.
His work is highly sought after in the mid-Atlantic region and this is one his more scarce maps. Magazine paper stock. Black and white with just a hint of age toning around the edges.
This piece shows mild wear, including light tanning to sheet.
