Original 1967 Psychedelic Poster Advertising Blues Guitarist Otis Rush at The Matrix Club, San Francisco

San Francisco, CA: Privately Printed, 1967. Very Good. Item #18660

A fabulous, and quite scarce, original 1967 poster advertising an upcoming show by African-American Mississippi blues guitarist, Otis Rush, at The Matrix Club in San Francisco.

"The Matrix was a nightclub in San Francisco from 1965 to 1972 and was one of the keys to what eventually became known as the "San Francisco sound" in rock music. Located at 3138 Fillmore Street in Cow Hollow, in a 100-capacity beer-and-pizza shop, The Matrix opened 13 August 1965, showcasing Jefferson Airplane, which singer Marty Balin had put together as the club's "house band". Balin had persuaded three limited partners to put up $3,000 apiece to finance the club's opening, giving them 75 percent ownership, while he retained 25 percent for creating and managing it.

"Rush (1934 – 2018) was an American blues guitarist and singer-songwriter. His distinctive guitar style featured a slow-burning sound and long bent notes. With qualities similar to the styles of other 1950s artists Magic Sam and Buddy Guy, his sound became known as West Side Chicago blues and was an influence on many musicians, including Michael Bloomfield, Peter Green and Eric Clapton.

"Rush was left-handed and played as such; however, his guitars were strung with the low E string at the bottom, upside-down from typical guitarists. He often played with the little finger of his pick hand curled under the low E for positioning. It is widely believed that this contributed to his distinctive sound. He had a wide-ranging, powerful tenor voice."

This poster is printed on card stock in bright fuchsia and green by Victor Moscoso from an original black and white photo by Belgian artist, Raoul Ubac in the mid 1930s. This was the eighth in Moscoso's Neon Rose series and just one printing was published. Mild rubbing with moderate edge wear, particularly at the corners, where they have been rounded.

This historic piece measures 19" X 13 1/4" and is perfect for framing and display!

The perfect piece for any modern-day blues, MCM, or 1960s' collector.
