A British Military Stronghold for More Than 300 Years

1754 French and Indian War-Era John Gibson Map of Gibraltar

London: The Gentleman's Magazine, 1754. Very Good. Item #18663

A lovely 1754 John Gibson Map of The British stronghold of Gibraltar, the strategic gateway to the Mediterranean Sea.

The British have controlled Gibraltar since it was captured in 1704 during the War of Spanish Succession, and it was ceded by Spain to them in perpetuity in 1713. It remains one of the most strategic pints in the world even today.

This map depicts a much different Gibraltar than exists today, still dominated by the Rock, but with the inhabited are much smaller. Shown are the Governor's Gardens, the military barracks, the powder magazine, various guard houses and the several redoubts and fortifications. The lower right features a higher view map of the Bay of Gibraltar in vignette.

Measuring 19" X 8", this map is perfect for framing and display!
