A Map of the United States At the Close of the Revolutionary War - 1957 Pictorial Map
Holyoke, MA: Linweave Paper Co., 1957. 1st Edition. Very Good. Item #18800
A vibrant mid-century map depicting the newly formed United States as it was after defeating Great Britain in the Revolutionary War. The first in a series of four historical pictorial maps by Karl Smith for Linweave depicting illustrating the territorial expansion of the United States.
Linweave was a historic American paper company known for its high-quality, distinctive papers and promotional materials, most famously the psychedelic 1967 Linweave Tarot, a unique deck commissioned to showcase their cardstock. The company also produced "Limited Editions" books.
Smith's map depicts the United States immediately after the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, outlined in green, withing the context of the present-day U.S. borders. Illustrations throughout the map depict life within those territories at the time, such as American Indian tribe locations and Spanish held territories at the time, from Florida in the South to California in the West. In the Atlantic Ocean are shown illustrations of ships which correspond to historical events leading up to 1783, such as Columbus' discovery of America, John Paul Jones epic naval battle during the Revolution against HMS Serapis. In the lower left is a timeline of historical events not illustrated on the map, such as Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown in 1781, Lexington & Concord in 1775, and the Boston Tea Party in 1773.
Some mild edge wear and age toning in the margins. This historic piece measures 22" X 17.5" and is perfect for framing and display!
