1862 Civil War newspaper with an inside-page complete printing of ABRAHAM LINCOLN's EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION.
This October 11, 1862 edition of the Illustrated London News contains an early inside-page printing of the preliminary EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION issued by President ABRAHAM LINCOLN and features his signature in block type at the end. Also featured on the front page is a detailed headline report on the Proclamation with the headline, "President Lincoln's Proclamation". The report continues on page two taking up approximately half the page, with the printing of the Proclamation beginning on page two and finishing on page three.
'Abraham Lincoln issued two emancipation proclamations -the Preliminary document on September 22, 1862, and a final document one hundred days later. In the first, Lincoln declared that all slaves within rebel territory would be "forever" free unless the Confederate states returned to the Union. Lincoln followed through with his promise, and on New Year's Day 1863, he signed the final Emancipation Proclamation.
