British March on St Michaels, Maryland

1813 War of 1812 Newspaper - British Forces Land in Talbot County, Maryland in Attempt to Capture St Michaels

Washington, DC: The National Intelligencer, 1813. 1st Edition. Very Good. Item #18959

An original 1813 War of 1812 newspaper with early reports announcing that the British Army has landed in Talbot County, on Maryland's Eastern Shore off Chesapeake Bay, along the coast of the Miles River about two miles from St Michaels, a shipbuilding center at the time, in attempt to capture the town.

This September 2, 1813 newspaper features three inside-page reports covering the news. One report states that as the troops advanced upon St Michaels, they were "informed by a negro of the force at St, Michaels, the guns mounted, and the extensive breast works thrown up, and retired without daring to advance to their intended attack."

The reports say that the British Navy was moored between Poplar and Sharp's Islands and landed using 53 barges.

St. Michaels has been known since as "The Town That Fooled the British", in recognition of the legend which states that the townspeople hung lanterns high in the trees through town to simulate lights through home windows and as a result, when the British bombarded the town, they overshot their intended targets and the town was largely spared.
