We
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1927. 8vo. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #19018
A sublime association copy of Linbergh's autobiography, inscribed to the secretary of one of Lindbergh's foremost patrons and supporters, Harry F. Guggenheim.
This book was gifted by Lindbergh to Dorthea Mehldau, Guggenheim's secretary, in 1928, and features Lindbergh's signature and inscription to Mehldau. Included with the book is a 1974 letter by Mehldau, by then Mehldau-Styffe, documenting her introduction to Lindbergh and Guggenheim's support for the aviator. Also included with the book is a 1975 newspaper clipping featuring Guggenheim's estate, where Lindbergh stayed while he was writing "We".
Mehldau wrote her letter on August 28, 1974, two days after Lindbergh's death and writes that she was "thrilled the day that Mr. Guggenheim introduced me to Charles Linbergh. I never dreamed that this would happen to me. One day I took some dictation from Linbergh. To show his appreciation he gave me the book "We" and a picture of himself with the "Spirit of St. Louis". He autographed them for me -"
Blue cloth with titling and decoration in gilt. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for two items adhered to the front flyleaf by Mehldau, a 1977 13 cent U.S. Postage Stamp featuring Linbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis", and Mehldau's typed name taped down.
The book is in excellent condition with just a hint of wear along the edges. Married dust jacket with mild edge wear, with a spine and edges that are lightly sunned. Presents handsomely in archival mylar.
Overall an exceptional copy with very desirable associative provenance.
