A beautiful 1860 reproduction with the facsimile signature of George Washington regarding early Society of the Cincinnati membership, admitting one Winthrop Sargent to the recently formed gentleman's organization exclusive to former Revolutionary War officers and their progeny.
This poster, designed by Augustin Belle features allegorical imagery, including an figure of Fame and a depiction of the victorious Cincinnatus returning to his plow. As is the case here, these certificates were often signed by both Washington and Secretary Henry Knox, Washington's former Chief of Artillery for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The original certificates were printed on vellum, this one on paper.
Mild age toning and rubbing.
