Rare First Edition of this mid-nineteenth century classic work on the practice of medicine in two volumes.

The author was then the Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy in the University of Pennsylvania; one of the physicians of the Pennsylvania Hospital; one of the authors of the Dispensatory of the United States of America. George B. Wood also he became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1827 and was President from 1848 to 1879. Wood was also a President of the American Philosophical Society (1859-1879) and the American Medical Association (1855-1856).

Volume I covers the entirety of Part I on General Pathology and Therapeutics - Constituent Forms of Disease, Causes of Disease (or etiology), Symptomatology (or semeiology), and General Therapeutics. Also includes Part II on Special Pathology and Therapeutics - General Diseases, Constitutional Diseases, and Local Diseases.

Original calf with titling in gilt on spines, with two black leather spine labels. Scarce 1st edition of this gem of medicine literature which, while aiming to present what is directly and practically important to the physician, intends also to be an exponent specially of what the author himself knows and believes on the subjects of which it treats.

Some age wear on bindings with spines and edges rubbed. Sporadic and minor foxing throughout. Slight age-toning along paper margin. Bindings in overall good condition, with some mottling to spines and top joint edges of volume II separated near top. Interiors in good to very good condition.
